In the 1600s, Jesus revealed to St. Margaret Mary Alocoque the devotion to His Sacred Heart in order to increase our love. Showing her His Pierced Heart, surrounded with thorns, topped with a cross, and aflame with love, He said:
“Behold the Heart which has so loved men that It has spared nothing, even to exhausting and consuming Itself, in order to testify Its love; and in return, I receive from the greater part only ingratitude, by their irreverence and sacrilege, and by the coldness and contempt they have for Me in this Sacrament of Love (the Eucharist).”
He later requested the Nine First Fridays in reparation for sins committed against Him:
"I promise you in the excessive mercy of My Heart that Its all-powerful love will grant to all those who receive Holy Communion on nine first Fridays of consecutive months the grace of final repentance; they will not die under My displeasure or without receiving their sacraments, My divine Heart making Itself their assured refuge at the last moment."
Our Lord Jesus made twelve promises to those who make reparation to His Sacred Heart. (See the list in the resourced on this page.)
During the apparitions of Fatima in 1917 and later in 1925, the Lord established devotion to His mother's Immaculate Heart.
At Fatima, Our Lady showed the children hell "where the souls of poor sinners go." She continued:
"To save them, God wishes to establish in the world devotion to the Immaculate Heart. If what I say to you is done, many souls will be saved and there will be peace."
In a 1925 vision, Jesus said to Lucia:
"Have compassion on the Heart of your most holy Mother, covered with thorns, with which ungrateful men pierce it at every moment, and there is no one to make an act of reparation to remove them.”
The Blessed Mother then said to Lucia:
"Look, my daughter, at my Heart, surrounded with thorns with which ungrateful men pierce me every moment by their blasphemies and ingratitude. You at least try to console me and say that I promise to assist at the hour of death, with the graces necessary for salvation, all those who, on the first Saturday of five consecutive months, shall confess, receive Holy Communion, recite five decades of the Rosary, and keep me company for fifteen minutes while meditating on the fifteen mysteries of the Rosary, with the intention of making reparation to me."
The month of June is dedicated to the Sacred Heart, and the Feasts of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary take place each year on the last Friday and Saturday of June.
Individuals, families, and even businesses are encouraged to consecrate themselves to the Sacred Heart and Immaculate Heart, and to enthrone an image of Jesus in their homes.
